HGV class 1 driver jobs in Cardiff

Articulated work belongs to the freight transport by road industry. The 2024 Business Register and Employment Survey counted 350 employee jobs in it across Cardiff, 0.15% of the 227,000 employee jobs the survey records in the area.

Trunking and tramping routes are planned around operating centres rather than around towns, so the Cardiff figure describes where the vehicles are based, not where the drivers live. The survey also counts 400 warehousing and storage jobs in Cardiff, which is what sits at one end of most class 1 runs.

Median full-time pay for a job based in Cardiff was £38,225 a year in 2025, across every occupation in the area together. It is not a driving figure, and no local driving figure is published anywhere, because earnings are not broken down by occupation at this level.

UK Business Counts recorded 100 freight transport by road workplaces in Cardiff at the March 2025 reference date, 10 of them employing ten people or more. 90 of them, 90%, employ under ten, which is the ordinary shape of haulage.

Of the freight transport by road employee jobs the 2024 survey splits by hours in Cardiff, 125 are part time, 35.7% of the split. The middle across Wales is 35.7%, so Cardiff sits level with it, 11th of 22 areas on this measure. That is a high part-time share for road freight, and in a local industry this size a handful of jobs moves the proportion a long way.

Two further counts round out the Cardiff picture: 365 employee jobs in postal and courier activities, and 1,115 employee jobs across freight, warehousing and courier work.

Measured on employee jobs in freight transport by road, Cardiff ranks 10th of the 22 areas in Wales. The middle across Wales is 325, against 350 in Cardiff. Next to Cardiff in that order sit Caerphilly at 350 and Vale of Glamorgan at 350.

On the separate business register count of freight transport by road workplaces, Cardiff ranks 6th of the 22 areas in Wales. The middle across Wales is 70, against 100 in Cardiff. Next to Cardiff in that order sit Bridgend at 100 and Rhondda Cynon Taf at 85.

None of this counts adverts. It counts 350 jobs and 100 workplaces that already exist in Cardiff, which is a different thing from what is open to apply for today.
