Picking and packing sit inside that count, along with goods in, stock control and shift management, because the survey counts sites rather than tasks. The 2,250 freight transport by road jobs in Surrey are counted separately, and they are the vehicles those sites load.

UK Business Counts recorded 135 warehousing and storage sites in Surrey at the March 2025 reference date, 35 of them employing ten people or more. 100 of them, 74.1%, employ under ten, well below the usual share. Warehousing that shape is built on big sheds, and big sheds mean four on four off, twilights and nights.

Of the warehousing and storage employee jobs the 2024 survey splits by hours in Surrey, 500 are part time, 14.3% of the split. The middle across the South East is 13%, so Surrey sits above it, 8th of 19 areas on this measure. That is a full-time shift picture, with part-time hours around weekend and peak cover.

Two further counts round out the Surrey picture: 1,900 employee jobs in postal and courier activities, and 7,650 employee jobs across freight, warehousing and courier work.

On the separate business register count of warehousing sites employing 10 or more, Surrey ranks 6th of the 19 areas in the South East. The middle across the South East is 10, against 35 in Surrey. Across the 153 areas in England the middle is 10. Next to Surrey in that order sit West Sussex at 40 and Buckinghamshire at 15.
