What the published data covers

Adding up the published local figures across the 145 areas with data gives 7,410 on the measure this role is indexed by, which is deputy manager, filled posts. The middle area records 25. That is arithmetic over local releases, not a national statistic, and areas the publisher withholds are simply absent from it.

The largest are Surrey at 325, Hampshire at 250, Kent at 250, Hertfordshire at 225, Essex at 200. Coverage runs across 9 regions of England.

For national context, Skills for Care reported an adult social care vacancy rate of 6.2%, about 96,000 posts, in the year to March 2026, down from 7% and the lowest since 2015-16, against a whole-economy rate of 2.2%. Where the role sits

Between the seniors and the registered manager, and the balance changes with the size of the home. In a small service you will be on the floor most days. In a large one you may run compliance almost full time.

The audit cycle is usually yours: care plans, medication, falls, weights, infection control, and the action plans that come out of them. Doing that well is the clearest evidence you are ready to register.

Getting the post

Most deputies come from a senior care assistant or nurse post in a similar service. A Level 3 Diploma is the usual floor and a Level 5 is often funded once you are in the chair.

Ask whether the deputy is counted in the care numbers and what happens to the rota when the manager is on leave. If the honest answer is that you cover both jobs, that should be reflected in the pay.
